How I Met Your Mother: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

5. Season Three

How I Met Your Mother Ted Yellow Umbrella
CBS

With season two out of the way and Ted and Robin's relationship done and dusted, season three was able to get back to the business of Ted and the Mother. With season three, focus finds itself on Ted getting back on the dating scene with Barney and making a fool of himself, showing Ted at his most flawed and compelling.

The season also features a reprise of the slap bet created in season two, and finally gives some insight into how the gang met each other and are still friends after all these years. All of this, topped off with the first reference to Tracy's yellow umbrella and a compelling fall-out between Ted and Barney that sees the gang more fractured than ever, makes season three an absolute blast.

Unfortunately, the last stretch of the season introduces audiences to Stella, who starts off promising until it becomes clear that Ted has no idea what he's doing and is just rushing into things because he's tired of being alone. Also, he decides to tell his kids about the time he had a threesome, which is just...not okay.
