With season five, How I Met Your Mother outdid itself. With a tighter focus on the adventures of Barney, the season offers up some of the show's most hilarious and iconic sequences, from the Girls versus Suits musical number to the infamous Playbook. It also sees Barney and Robin in an ill-fated relationship for the first time, and allows the season to better itself with every new episode.
Outside of the hilarity that can be found in "Hooked," "Perfect Week" and "Home Wreckers," season five also shows the series branching out into much more dramatic territory with episodes like "The Window," which sees Ted chasing the Girl Next Door and renewing his search for true love, and "Last Cigarette Ever," which sees the gang come together to stop smoking.
Season five also has the best development in Ted's story, as he decides to become an architecture teacher and finds himself feeling at peace with his career. This, added with the top-tier humour, makes HIMYM's fifth outing the perfect balance of everything the show stands for, being at once hilarious, thoughtful and sweet through and through.
