Season 7's Symphony of Illumination places Robin in the role of the narrator. She tells her two children the story of how she told their father (Barney) she was pregnant. However, after a test, Robin and Barney discover she is not pregnant, and celebrate accordingly.

Shortly thereafter, Robin is called back into the doctor's office, where she learns she is infertile. Although she never wanted kids, this upsets Robin, and the gang notices. Robin makes up a lie about Olympic Pole Vaulting, and correctly predicts how each of her friends will react. After a while, Robin accepts her infertility, and says to her children "I'm glad you aren't real." Then, in one of the show's most heartbreaking moments, Robin's imaginary couch turns into a cold and lonely bench, where Robin sits alone.

However, Robin soon learns that she is not alone, as she returns to her apartment to find that Ted has set up AC/DC Christmas lights for her, in reference to their joke from earlier. Although Robin might be upset, she'll always have friends to pick her up when she's feeling down.

Because of Symphony of Illumination's emotional gut punch, as well as the hysterical subplot featuring Marshall trapped on the roof of his house, the episode stands out as the best of Season 7, even over the likes of Ducky Tie, The Stinson Missile Crisis, Disaster Averted, Tick Tick Tick, The Drunk Train, Trilogy Time, and The Magician's Code.
