James Gandolfini: His 10 Most Intense Scenes

9. "I Can't See You Anymore" - Romance & Cigarettes

james gandolfini romance and cigs Ahhh, "Romance & Cigarettes". Who can forget this gem of a musical that featured John Turturro, one of our time's greatest character actors, directing James Gandolfini who just so happens to also be one of our time's greatest character actors? Well, if you're one of the few that caught it then you wouldn't likely forget it. There is singing, there is dancing, and there is adultery, but most of all there is emotion. You would expect as much from a musical set in the world of working-class New York, that tells a story of a husband's journey from infidelity to redemption. All of that aside, as I watch the scene for the twentieth time I can't help but notice that I'm constantly being punched in the face with fists made of the most powerful Gandolfini references imaginable. Was I watching a montage of his career? Infidelity? Hello, perhaps James's greatest film role came when he portrayed another guilt laden adulterer in the critically acclaimed "The Man Who Wasn't There". Notice what she she says when he tells her he almost loves her? That's right, "Killing me softly." His character's name in the film is Nick Murder. We all know what Tony Soprano's best skill was don't we? And lastly, check out that freakish WhereTheWildThingsAre-like strength he displays when he lifts her by the arms and tosses her into the abyss. Is there singing? Yes. Does Kate Winslet have a weird accent? Yes. Does she spend half of this scene looking like the Little Mermaid? Yes. Nonetheless, it's a pretty intense scene. Check it out.
