Krypton Season 1: Ranking Every Major Character From Worst To Best
9. Val-El
In many ways, Seg-El's grandfather Val-El is Krypton's very own version of Jor-El from the original Christopher Reeve Superman films.
The beginning of the first episode showed how Val-El was sentenced to death for insisting the presence of an alien threat (Brainiac) and his grandson was forced to watch his (supposed) death from mere feet away.
He later returned as a hologram in the fabled Fortress of Solitude, providing insight to Seg and Adam Strange as to how they could go about defeating Brainiac. During this time, Val proves himself as an exceptionally entertaining mentor even if he's not all that well-rounded as a character.
When the real Val returns late in the season, there's also very interesting moment in which we see the disparity between the idealistic hologram version of Val and the more cynical real-life version of him who had spent the previous fourteen years trapped in the Phantom Zone (and all but abandoned hope that Brainiac could be stopped).
