Modern Family: 10 Examples Supporting Phil Dunphy's Candidacy Of TV's Best Dad

8. "Good Cop, Bad Dog" - Season 2, Episode 22

82... in which he cracks the whip on Haley and Alex in hopes they will stop taking advantage of him In another daughters based lesson, Phil is assigned to be the bad cop while the designated slave driver Claire takes Luke and step-brother, Manny, out to celebrate a good report card. The boys express they are unhappy Phil will not be included in the fun as much as Phil does, however it is agreed that it's his turn to take the reigns. Initially, Phil takes the nice route, asking the girls to clean their bathroom before going out and carrying on with their plans for the day. Within minutes, they yell to Phil that they're finished and run to the car in order to leave. Phil, checking on the bathroom, sees it is still disgusting and runs out after them, yelling for them to stop. Haley still attempts to drive away, stopping only when Phil jumps on the hood of the car, claiming that they have "poked the bear", meaning big trouble. We watch as Phil, pale and stern, starts cracking the whip on the girls, forcing them to scrub, organize and unclog the bathtub - all average chores that don't seem unfair to me at all. To the girls' dismay, Phil begins taping their laptops shut and ordering them to continue on with their housework passed the point of Claire's instructions. His drastic change from easy going parent to wicked boss is a direct result of the girls taking advantage of him. When Claire gets home, after failing at being the fun parent herself, Phil is reduced to a stuttering mess, begging her to never make him be mean again. Though he is known to be a push over, Phil provides the girls with a very valuable lesson here. Don't ever underestimate a nice guy, especially when he has to power to take everything away from you.
