... in which he proudly wears his number one dad shirt while missing his kids It is apparent from the beginning on this episode that Phil has had a wonderful time having his kids home for summer break. It is now, on the first day of school, that he realizes his life is going to change as much as his children's. Claire, however, basks in the first day of school glow, knowing she finally has time for herself again. In an attempt to keep his mind off of his children, Phil challenges Claire to a race around the block. Claire doesn't want to, at first, because she knows that she is going to beat him, which may upset him further. Halfway through the race, Claire is the obvious victor, however Phil is still trying with all his might. Hot, Phil removes his sweatshirt to reveal a T-shirt with his family's faces printed on it with the phrase "World's Greatest Dad" written as well. It is then that Claire realizes Phil is really hurting now that the kids are out of the house. She even says, "I realized that the first day of school is tough on all my kids, especially the one I married." Phil is not afraid to show how much he loves and cares for his family. I have never seen a more proud father in my life, especially with kids who, from the outside, don't appear to be particularly fantastic. The sporting of his beloved t-shirt is an everpresent reminder that, even though we may not be with our families, our families are always with us. Awww...
