10 Most British Doctor Who Moments

8. Everyone Craves Chips

There’s no meal Brits love more than fish and chips. And this has been true for many of the Doctor’s companions.

Captain Jack longs for fish and chips when imprisoned on the Valiant, and Donna offers to get them with the last of her wages in Turn Left.

Meanwhile, the Eleventh Doctor tries to tempt Amy and Rory with fish and chips in the Ganger two-parter, Clara recalls eating them with her mum after getting lost on Blackpool beach. And the first place we ever see Graham, in one of the specially-shot teasers for Series 11, is a chippy.

Additionally, the Doctor, Martha and Jack eat chip shops chips while on the run in The Sound of Drums and Ryan visits Tibo’s flat armed with them in Can You Hear Me?.

Chips have, more broadly, been associated with two of the Doctor’s companions: Rose (who craves them in The End of the World and serves them in School Reunion), and Bill (who serves them in the St. Luke’s canteen prior to meeting the Doctor).

Of course, other types of takeaway are available. Elton intends to take Ursula for a Chinese in Love & Monsters, the Twelfth Doctor munches on prawn crackers when meeting the Landlord, and one of Tzim Sha’s victims spent his final moments eating a kebab.

And it’s not just savoury British food the show has paid tribute to: jelly babies, jammy dodgers and custard creams all rank among the Doctor’s favourite snacks.
