7. Devilman Crybaby
A Netflix original anime based on a manga of the same name, this gorgeously animated series from Japan centres on a world where an ancient race of demons are returning to reclaim the world from humans. The main plot revolves around a young man named Akira, who merges with a demon that failed to possess him, taking on all its powers, along with his childhood friend Ryo, who reveals his discovery of demons to Akira in the first place and tasks him to help find and fight them.
As the series progresses, however, this seemingly simple premise becomes increasingly complex as Akira gets to know both human and demon alike.
The visuals of this show elevate it above many other animated series, with unsettling angles and bold, somewhat surreal colours and patterns, not even mentioning the slick, beautiful animation and dark, disturbing imagery that reflects its mature rating.
Devilman Crybaby has proven one of Netflix's best original anime so far, and one that is actually Japanese in origin, and its horrific yet intriguing themes make it a must-watch for the spooky season - and even outside of it.
