Picard - 10 Essential Seven Of Nine Star Trek Episodes

5. The Borg Children - Collective

Seven was offered several opportunities in the course of the show to display her maternal side, notably with One and Naomi Wildman. While One's tenure was brief and Naomi was a member of another family, it is the group of Borg children that Voyager encounters in this season six episode that spark the longest mother-child relationship that Seven would be a part of.

They are introduced to her as a group of five, led by an adolescent drone who is desperate to rejoin the collective. The drones however are exactly as they appear - young, childish, immature. She asserts dominance over them, reminding them that she was Borg. She stands in as a role model. The situation starts to quickly unravel on their Cube and the leader rapidly loses control on them. When he is killed, the others easily agree to follow Seven back to Voyager.

The episode is key but not least for the closing scene. All four children take their place alongside Seven's regeneration alcove, connected to her now through emotion and technology. As Seven moves to leave them to rest, she dims the lights in the cargo bay - something we had not seen her do for herself during her own regeneration cycles. The closing shot shows Seven's tender gaze on them as they sleep. She was now their guardian and their protector - an aspect of her character that we are bound to see returning in Star Trek Picard.
