Ranking Every HBO Miniseries From Worst To Best

26. Our Boys

I May Destroy You
HBO

Another gripping miniseries based on real events, Our Boys was a controversial entry into the HBO canon, simultaneously praised and criticised, especially in its native middle east. This is an emotive and distressing story handled with poise and respect, a difficult watch that handles a tricky subject commendably.

The focus is the murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, a 16 year old Palestinian teenager who in 2014 was killed in Jerusalem by Israli citizens. The narrative begins with what was thought to be the inciting incident for this, the earlier murder of three Israeli teens suspected to have been committed by Hamas.

The theme of the series is the never ending cycle of violence in one of the world’s most disputed territories. With Khdeir’s death at the centre, we see tensions rise and the possibility of further conflict go from a threat to a nigh-on certainty.

It’s a heavy bit of TV which gained accusations of bias from both sides of the divide. It’s not an easy watch - not that it should be - and there have been arguments that its history isn’t entirely sound, but it’s gripping and very well made.
