Riverdale: 10 Characters Who Deserve More Love

6. Reggie Mantle

Every red-headed heartthrob needs a good rival and Reggie Mantle lives up to the role. His acerbic insults make him a scene-stealer and he's full of potential, something Riverdale writers should consider bringing out next season.

At the beginning of the series, Reggie's bravado as a skillful Bulldog knows no bounds. He assumes the captain position will go to him and blasts Archie when the humble carrot top is chosen instead. Nevertheless, Reggie relents when he observes Archie's injured arm and he advises his nemesis to sit on the bench. The notable scene hinted at Reggie's sympathetic leanings even if they're hidden most of the time.

A couple promising moments in later episodes highlight a gentler Mantle. He tries to convince Archie to accept the captain jersey after Archie declines Coach Clayton's offer. Reggie also joins the search party prompted by Polly's disappearance despite his failed flirtations with Polly in a deleted scene. Beyond the cockiness, Reggie exhibits some sensitivity in the few flashes fans see of him.

If these brief bits are any indication, the audience should expect more character dimension for Riverdale's star athlete in the future. The guy who scores touchdowns wins laughs for his off-color remarks but developing his character could inspire interesting commentary.
