Seinfeld: How It Should Be Re-Cast In 2021

4. Elaine Benes - Jessica Williams

For a while there was talk of the “Seinfeld Curse” as former cast members struggled to find meaningful work after the show wrapped. Over the past decade, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has evidenced this isn’t true for all of them. Still, she’ll be indelibly tied to Elaine forever; her performance was a thing of crazed beauty, the woman who thought she was above the boys’ nonsense but inevitably got pulled in every time.

Performing Elaine requires equal parts aloof poise and free spirited abandonment, and few today fit the bill better than Jessica Williams. She’s appeared in Booksmart and Girls and had a spell as a correspondent on The Daily Show and frequently combines high and low comedy, equally at home with the intellectual and the flat out goofy.

Much of Elaine’s fun came from the fact that she seemed to have a lot further to fall than the other guys - she felt superior, but ended up in the same mess as everyone else. Williams has that dignity, and the ability to switch things up in a heartbeat, that would make her so ideal for the role.
