9. Aimee, Steve And Their Goat

The direction of Aimee and Steve was in a precarious position following season two. Naturally, Aimee's trauma after the bus incident left her in a sensitive place. But, as one of the funniest characters in the show, there had to be something light-hearted to keep her feeling like herself, and that's where the goat came in.
Season three saw Aimee and Steve adopt a commitment goat to keep their relationship moving forward. Naturally, this led to plenty of hilarious hijinks as the goat ran amuck around the school and even Otis/Jean's house.
Part of what makes this such a great story is that it's not really about the goat; it's about Aimee clinging to a relationship that she needs to be out of. The central conflict comes as Aimee realises she needs to break up with Steve but is afraid to end their relationship.
It may just be a goofy animal gag on the front page, but most of this novel is about Aimee and Steve's fractured romance.
