Sharknado 2 Will Hit New York And You Can Tweet For The Tagline
Sharknado is the latest water-cooler buzzword, trending tweet and potential drinking game all rolled into one, and SYFY isnt resting on its laurels when it comes to their bad z-movie darling of the moment. Although the ratings for The Asylum produced movie a swarm of sharks flopping around in a tornado were relatively modestaround 1.4 million which is somewhat light for their usual CGI monster extravaganza--it exploded the Twitterverse. A combination of a hair brained idea and patently ridiculous moments like Ian Ziering flying into a shark with a chainsaw in hand inspired everyone from Mia Farrow (who jokingly claimed she was watching with Philp Roth) to Damon Lindelof (offering to write the sequel) to tweet about it. So, no surprise, here comes a sequel that few will watch but everyone will talk about. The Asylum, who cheerfully own their reputation as dedicated rip-off artists and concept-first, script-later (if we have time) television schlock-masters, have announced a Sharknado sequel, set in New York and forecast to make landfall in 2014. Meanwhile, Thomas Vitale is hilariously playing the film up as if it were the latest Marvel blockbuster, saying Every once in a while, there is a perfect storm on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel. What we can guarantee is that Sharknado 2 will be lots of fun. We'll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn't want our fans to worry they wouldn't get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year." A tad over-the-top, but its important to strike when the iron is hot, and Syfy is doing just that, cashing in on that unusual social media niche they occupy. Right now, Syfy has invited fans to tweet suggested taglines for the sequel, using the hashtag #Sharknado to share their submissions. Although its going to be hard to beat the originals Enough Said, one imagines that theres a good Big Apple pun waiting to be exploited. For those who may want to know what Thunder Levin was smoking when he concocted Sharknadoor some of his other masterpieces like Atlantic Rim or the C Thomas Howell starring Mutant Vampire Zombies in the Hoodyou can join a live chat with the writer this afternoon. While I dont have clever taglines to share, I do think its important that Syfy keep the franchise fresh, and just making a bigger Sharknado isnt going to cut it for rabid fans; that approach didnt work for Human Centipede, after all. In fact, its not too late to plan for a third Sharknado installment that would pit the titular weather singularity against another monstrous malady. My vote goes to Sharknado VS Zombiecane. What do you think? Is there anything left to be said about the human condition in the wake of the original Sharknado? More importantly, will Lance Henriksen be available to play the wily hunter in a flying sea trawler puttering above the Empire state looking for a bite?
