Sons Of Anarchy: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

1. Season Four

Sons Of Anarchy
FX

Season four may not have had the best ending in the history of Sons of Anarchy, but everything before the finale is so expertly crafted that it is still the best season the show ever graced us with.

As the club move into the drug trade, Clay's villainy shows itself without remorse when he murders Piney - father of Opie, who is once more betrayed by the club. Clay here is at his most unhinged, unrelenting and irredeemable, whilst Jax is forced to step up and guide the club through the feuds that threaten to break them apart.

Opie's taste for vengeance is particularly brilliant to watch this season, as is Clay's descent to evil. Hard to watch in places, especially when he beats Gemma, his arc is nonetheless a masterclass in how to write a compelling villain. The season may have made a mistake not killing Clay in the finale, but it's hard to argue with what came before the season's final moments.

Season four has betrayal, complex twists, drug cartels, and serves as a point of no return for Jax and the club, hammering home the idea that none of what you've been watching is going to end on a happy note. It's the best of the best, a true twisting heartbreaker that shows just how amazing the show could be.
