Star Trek: 10 Biggest Examples Of Vulcans Being Illogical

9. Discipline Is Washed Away

Amongst Vulcans, the name of Sarek is a revered one; a legendary ambassador, he served the Federation far into his old age. Perhaps too far, as in his 202nd year it was discovered by the crew of the Enterprise that he had he unfortunately developed Bendii syndrome; a form of Vulcan dementia. In order to stop this from interfering with his final negotiations with the Legarans, a pain-staking task which had already taken 93 years, those close to Sarek hid the truth from him, even to the point of telepathic help from his aide, Sakkath. Alongside Surak's wife, Perrin, the two Vulcans seemed to be in denial about the effects of Sarek's disease, and allowed it to jeopardise not just the Legaran treaty, but also the Enterprise crew themselves. While it is true that the Legarans were sticklers for detail and the negotiations would be set back by the presence of another ambassador, it seems that the Vulcans also considered Sarek's reputation to be a greater priority. Somehow the ego of the one outweighed the needs of the many. After discussions with both Picard and Data however, Sarek and Sakkath respectively are persuaded by logical arguments, and a new solution is devised. By mind melding with Picard, Sarek is able to borrow a measure of the captain's control, who temporarily shouldered the burden of his disorderly emotions. Possibly the best acting performance by Patrick Stewart notwithstanding, this allowed Sarek to complete the negotiations before retiring gracefully.
