Star Trek: 10 Minor Villains Who Were Awesome
6. Captain John Ransom (Equinox - Voyager)

A second two-parter character appears in our countdown to the top. He's the mirror of Janeway and the might-have-been representation of what could have happened if Voyager had chosen to make the journey back to the Alpha Quadrant at any cost and without the constraint of the Prime Directive. All Ransom cares about is getting home and by using any means necessary. He might appear righteous and have a really cool little ship with the USS Equinox but the mission and intent are just all wrong.
He isn't evil at heart but becomes so through necessity and survival instinct. Voyager becomes a pawn in his deadly activities and rather than stop and save them, his mind is already set on a quick return to the Alpha Quadrant and at the cost of anything. For me he was always pretty slimy as a character and you just knew when he turned up that this was going to be anything but straightforward. Admittedly, I could have equally chosen the Equinox's holographic doctor just for being unrestrained with the removal of his ethical subroutines, but Ransom has to take the utmost credit as captain of the ship. All concern for Starfleet codes of conduct have long since been erased from his conscience. Driven, determined and just a little bit unhinged, Ransom even turns against his own comrades to secure the safety of his ship and crew. Just for note he did have a cooler ship than Voyager, which also helps secures his position.
