Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Ranking Every Major Character Worst To Best

12. Nog

Nog Star Trek
CBS Television Studios

As the first Ferengi in Starfleet, Nog was out to impress from the beginning. His impassioned speech to Sisko as to why he deserves a spot in the academy is moving. He laments the lot that he has been handed in life, seeing his father as a failure and his uncle's sole goal as greed.

Nog, aware of the power of greed, is still closer to his father in terms of his goals. He wants to excel and he believes that Starfleet is the way to do that. He is given his chance and he rapidly moves through the academy, though he grows very close to Joseph Sisko, preferring to spend his evenings hiding in New Orleans, away from his classmates.

He does manage to overcome this and succeed in the academy. He is then posted to Deep Space Nine, rising to the field rank of Ensign as the War begins. He is a highly capable officer, managing to keep his cool under the most extreme circumstances. However, nothing can prepare him for the loss he incurs.

On a mission to hold a remote outpost for the Federation, Nog is shot and loses his leg. The initial injury is cared for by Dr. Bashir, but it is the emotional trauma that follows that shows his true battle. With the help of his friends, he manages to get back to a sense of normality.

The late Aron Eisenberg brought a true sense of humanity to Nog, enshrining him as a character who is beloved by fans.
