Star Trek: Discovery 3.1 Review - Ups And Downs From That Hope Is You

5. Burnham's Belly Laughs (Up)

Star Trek Discovery Burnham
CBS

If Star Trek: Discovery has had one criticism leveled at it that is entirely fair, it is that it has treated much of its material as serious as a seizure.

From the Klingon War to the exploration of Science versus Religion, it has time and time again relied almost entirely on Sylvia Tilly to bring the laughs, and even those feel somewhat awkward or forced from time to time.

Yet here, echoing shades of Mariner, Burnham is drugged with a truth serum and some proper belly laughs follow suit. Sonequa Martin-Green's deliverence is perfect in this scenes, combining the nature of Burnham's extreme intelligence with the realisation of the situation that she is in. The two funniest lines?

The deadpan delivery of 'I saved all the things'

And, of course:

'I have a friend with red hair. You cannot give her any!'
