Star Trek: Every Ensign Ranked From Worst To Best

4. Hoshi Sato

Hoshi Sato was one of the most talented linguists on Earth when she took a commission aboard the Enterprise NX-01. She had made a few mistakes and eventually ended up being discharged for breaking her commander's arm, but Starfleet allowed her to return because they desperately needed a new language expert. She didn't want to leave her teaching job at first, but decided it would give her a great opportunity to learn new alien languages in space.

She was the first Human to become fluent in Klingonese, and spoke and understood over 38 different languages by 2152.

Using her talents as a linguist, Hoshi also helped gather important information on the Xindi from the Osaarians in the episode Anomaly, greatly helping with that conflict. Later in her life, she even developed the linguacode universal linguistics matrix, a system that could aid in communication during first contact when universal translators failed.

She retired from Starfleet with the rank of lieutenant commander after the Federation Charter was signed, but accomplished more as an ensign than some Admirals.
