Star Trek: Every Helmsman Ranked From Worst To Best

10. Chakotay

The thing with Chakotay was that he wasn't really very good at any one thing in particular, but always seemed to be second-best at just about everything onboard ship. He was meant to come across as a Jack-of-all-trades, but the writing of Star Trek: Voyager really side-lined him in the later seasons.

Chakotay was mainly seen at the helm in case of emergency, however there was one particular instance of his flying that sticks in memory. In the season five episode 'Timeless' (noted for being Voyager's 100th episode), Chakotay is entrusted to pilot the Delta Flyer ahead of Voyager. The objective was for the Delta Flyer to function like a tugboat or pilot light through the hazardous slipstream that they had hoped would get them home much sooner, requiring skilled piloting and sharp reflexes.

While this attempt led to disaster for Voyager itself, at the least, it demonstrated that Chakotay is a capable pilot beyond commanding his own ship, the Val Jean, at the beginning of the series.

Still bitter that Star Trek Enterprise got canned and almost old enough to angrily tell the kids to 'Get Off My Lawn!'
