Olatunde Osunsanmi's favourite episode of Star Trek is The Chase. "That episode had a profound impact on me when I was watching it as a kid," he told Variety. Season five of Star Trek: Discovery must have been quite the trip!

Equally an executive producer, Osunsanmi directed a total of 14 episodes of Discovery, starting with The Butcher's Knife Cares Not for the Lamb's Cry, and ending, fittingly, with Life Itself. He was also behind the camera for undoubtedly the best of the Short Treks, Calypso, and The Girl Who Made the Stars.

Section 31 won't be an addendum to Discovery's coda, however, but decidedly its own entity. As Osunsanmi told Mick Joest at SDCC, "Everything that we weren't allowed to do [in Discovery], we did it in this movie […] and it's still Star Trek". The form is the function Section 31.

Even though Georgiou (Mirror) has quite the established backstory, Osunsanmi was keen to insist that Section 31 was its "own contained movie," requiring "exactly zero" foreknowledge. Section 31 screenwriter Craig Sweeny was also mindful to balance the existing with the new, telling Variety's Adam Vary in March, "I wanted a low barrier of entry so that anybody could enjoy it".

Jack Kiely is a writer with a PhD in French and almost certainly an unhealthy obsession with Star Trek.
