Star Trek: Ranking The Captains Worst To Best

5. Captain James T Kirk (Kelvin Timeline)

Do they count as separate captains? Of course they do. A captain is judged by his decisions and his actions and the two Kirks led completely different lives at the helm of their ships, in completely separate timelines. They also went through completely different things as young men because of the split in those timelines. They're completely different characters.

Having said that, they're both made of the same stuff. The same free spirit and almost-defiant energy runs through Kelvin Kirk's veins as the mainline Kirk's. He can be petulant, hot-headed and arrogant, but thanks to a combination of his crew and his instincts, he's still a remarkable character.

He's slightly more defiant and more quick to passionate outbursts than his alternate version - because he has a darker backstory, of course - which makes him a little more of a loose cannon, but while that could hold him back, it's also one of his virtues at other times.
