Star Trek: Ranking The Series Intros Worst To Best
2. #2: Voyager
Star Trek: Voyager really embraced the Star Trek ideal of seeking out new life and boldly going where no one had gone before. This is ironic, actually, considering that Voyager’s crew wanted nothing more than to return home.
And yet, that’s why Voyager’s intro is almost perfect both as a series companion and an invitation to viewers.
It hits many of the same beats as ST:TNG and DS9. It opens with gentle music and a view of space, in this case solar flares lashing out. Voyager zips along, a flare consumes the screen, and the orchestral score swells.
The intro stands by emphasizing exploration. Voyager doesn’t just look sleek and futuristic. It actually interacts with its environment. It slices through a nebula, zooms over an icy landscape, and – perhaps the best moment of any Star Trek intro – skims above planetary rings, its reflection bouncing off countless rocks below.
The score accentuates the nature of the series, especially Voyager’s crew. Seventy years from home, they come together in good humor and shared purpose, first as a crew, then as a family. Likewise, the music is playful, then serene, and thoroughly resolved.
The series is not often anyone’s favorite entry in the franchise. But when it comes to intros, Voyager undeniably hit all the bases.
