Oh, Scotty. Quite possibly the most lovable character on the Original Series, it remains a controversy to this day that James Doohan never got his name on the opening credits.

The chief engineer on the Enterprise, Montgomery Scott was the man to constantly get the crew out of tight fixes (which generally tended to be every episode, with million to one odds). He also commanded the ship as lieutenant commander when neither Kirk or Spock were aboard - and got them out of a few scrapes at times too. He is quick-witted and sharp, and an expert in his field. His identity is directly connected to the welfare of the ship and part of the love of his character is how warmly he address the Enterprise, taking a paternal attitude in some cases.

There's countless great Scotty moments on the Enterprise, although a personal highlight has to be the season two episode 'Wolf In The Fold', when the engineer is accused of murdering a series of women while on shore leave. While any fan now would claim they never believed it for a second, Doohan's performance is exemplary in this episode as a kind-hearted crewman who breaks down at the idea he could do something so dreadful. It's a rare and vulnerable side to the character we often didn't see.
