Like Jim Hopper, Steve has had an incredible story arc which transformed him from the quintessential bully of the show to the guy who gets along with everyone. But unlike Hopper, there isn't much growth left for his character. In fact, the only thing Steve is still missing out on seems to be love, which can easily be written into the show.

Although his permanent loss is set to be a serious blow for the fans, a death like this will finally show that Stranger Things is willing to take some risks, causing future dangerous scenarios to be watched through clenched fingers. And honestly speaking, I would hate to see a great character like Steve become lifeless in the living sense and get kicked to the side. So maybe death is the perfect solution to this problem of his.
