All right, you probably wouldn’t have missed this one, as any self-respecting superhero fan would have noticed the obvious name-drop of Batman’s home city. Still, the reference is more important than it at first seems.

Yes, after only being narrowly saved by Superman from certain death, a bystander tells his family “that’s it, we’re moving back to Gotham.” Apart from a pleasing nod to DC’s other big hero, this is a major deal within The CW-verse as it is remarkably the first time that Gotham has been explicitly mentioned in any of the four shows. Though there have been many previous Batman allusions - Arrow has namechecked Oracle and Bludhaven (Nightwing’s base of operations) and Legends of Tomorrow’s Rip Hunter mentioned seeing “dark knights fall.”

Also, after saving the family, Supes shoots them a cheeky wink. This has long been a staple of the character, although it has fallen out of fashion in recent years. The 1940s cartoons and the 1950s TV series both ended just about every episode with Clark winking at the audience.
