Supernatural: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best
13. Season Nine
Following on from perhaps the show's best season finale, season nine had an awful lot riding on its shoulders. With the Angels cut off from Heaven and Sam and Dean facing their biggest challenge yet, the season promised some pretty big things. But it just never really delivered. Sure, there were interesting twists scattered about, but all told season nine never really lands.
Here, Sam and Dean are at their most dysfunctional, coming to blows after a major fallout. But the extent of their feud never goes beyond "brothers sulking and being stubborn" territory, making the drama more annoying than affecting.
The season's best aspect comes courtesy of Castiel, who spends a few episodes adjusting to his new human life, making for some poignant moments. Unfortunately, even this subplot was unfairly underexplored, never really realising its potential. Add to that the messy narrative and wasted opportunities, and what you have is a season not nearly as good as it should have been.
