The Haunting Of Bly Manor: 9 Henry James Stories That Inspired The Series
9. The Great Good Place
The Great Good Place follows harried writer George Dane, who dreams of escaping to a place where he can rest and recover before returning to his overwhelming workload and social obligations. George gets his wish when he's transported to an idealistic resort — the great good place.
This isn't a macabre story, however, as the resort is filled with ordinary people who are also looking for a break, and George returns to the grind after finally feeling well-rested.
In the first episode of Bly Manor, we're introduced to Dani Clayton, the young American teacher who accepts the governess position at Bly in England. Much like George, Dani longs for an escape from her life, but she is running away from something much more traumatic — the death of her fiancé, Edmund, back home in America. After she told him she didn't want to get married anymore, Edmund exited the car angrily and was immediately hit by a truck in a particularly sudden and shocking scene.
Dani is left feeling guilty and traumatised, though she never quite finds the comforting peace that George did. In fact, Bly becomes her final resting place.
