The Haunting Of Bly Manor: 9 Henry James Stories That Inspired The Series
8. The Pupil
The Pupil focuses on the close bond between Morgan, a young precocious boy, and his tutor, Pemberton, a penniless Oxford graduate. Pemberton becomes the only adult Morgan can trust as his family's dishonest and ruthless behaviour aims to maintain their luxurious life, which they're unable to afford. This story ends with a classic James tragedy when Morgan dies from heart troubles just as his parents, who are finally evicted from their hotel, beg Pemberton to care for their son.
Episode two of Bly Manor looks back at Miles' time at boarding school and the erratic behaviour that eventually led to his expulsion, which was a way for him to get back to his sister, Flora. Much like Morgan and Pemberton, Miles forms a close bond with his teacher, Father Stack, and the pair have many deep discussions concerning morality.
While Morgan dies at the end of The Pupil and Miles dies at the end of The Turn of the Screw, Flanagan and his team were much kinder than James by sparing his life in this adaptation — though it was a close call due to Peter's possession.
