It's obvious in everything from The League Of Gentlemen through A Ghost Story For Christmas that Gatiss has a huge amount of love and affection for the horror genre, the classics of which have been frequently parodied and homaged across his work. His very personal and passionate 2010 three-part BBC Four series on the history of screen horror was a real treat, therefore, for people who share his interests.

Focusing on three particular eras and sub-genres that spoke personally to him, rather than an exhaustive history of the genre as a whole, A History Of Horror gave us a deeper look into the classic Universal monster cycle, British horrors of the 1960s and 70s - in particular those of Hammer and the short-lived folk horror cycle, and new, emergent American horrors of the same period - slasher flicks and stories of devil worship and demonic possession.

Gatiss makes for an engaging host, and his love of the gruesome and lurid shines through. It's only a shame that this was such a short series and so little seen. Horror Europa, a follow up focusing on European horror from German expressionism to the dark fantasy of Guillermo Del Toro, aired for one ninety-minute episode two years later, but that's it so far for Gatiss' documentary presenting career.
