The Simpsons: 10 Greatest Fox Gags

10. Four Regretting€™s At A Funeral (2013)

The gag in this episode is a good indication of just how unlikely it is that the Simpsons will ever stop teasing FOX News, as long as the show still has its valuable airtime. When Kent Brockman decides that he regrets not having taken the sweet fat cash that comes from being a cable news hack, he relocates to New York, which is where this delicious slice of satire comes in. If you€™ve seen any more than thirty seconds of FOX news you€™ll know this is pretty much the line they toe. But what is really cool about this gag is that the Simpsons don€™t just go after FOX alone €“ they go after the whole cable news brethren. While FOX€™s ticker on the building is the first new slogan seen, there's also a new slogan for FOX€™s ideological competitor MSNBC (€˜Fox Started It€™), and the increasingly irrelevant CNN (€˜Will Trade News for Food€™). The Simpsons writers are aware that not only is FOX an insane hybrid of conservative Christianity and neo-liberal economic dogma, but it is a successful monolith that has tainted all other news in America because of its success. Rather than simply poking fun at FOX€™s absurdity, the Simpsons make a bigger comment here on news in America €“ and that€™s pretty awesome for a show that people keep saying is past its use by date.
