The Simpsons: 10 Greatest Fox Gags

9. Homer Bad Man (1994)

When people talk about the classic era of the Simpsons, where the episodes were ground shatteringly hilarious and original, it€™s often episodes like this that they have in mind. In this episode Homer is accused of sexual harassment after he innocently grabs a gummy Venus de Milo from the jeans of the kids' babysitter who he is returning home. As the reports of what happened became increasingly misunderstood and inflated the media turns into a frenzy and as per usual the life of the family is turned upside down. One of the Homer€™s personal nadirs when he becomes the subject of a FOX Network Movie entitled €˜Homer S €“ Portrait Of An Ass Grabber€™, which hilariously exemplifies 1990s sensationalist made for TV movies in an eerily accurate way. In the film Homer is played by a malevolent Denis Franz (huge at the time for his performances in NYPD Blue) and Homer is depicted not just a sexual predator, but also a maniacal cat murderer. In the 1990s this kind of trashy television was FOX€™s speciality, and it seemed like any time there was some sort of scandal, big or small, it would be turned into a salacious expose, with poor production values, and even poorer script writing. The idea that in their trashy desperation FOX would pick up on a story like this is pretty accurate (if not exaggerated obviously) and a great jab from the Simpsons towards the other garbage that seemingly populated the rest of their network.
