The Simpsons: 10 More Moments More Important Than You Realised

4. Principal Skinner’s Prisoner Number

This one is actually really clever.

It's a well-known joke that Principal Skinner's old Vietnam prisoner helmet - as shown in the episode Homer's Barbershop Quartet - displays the number 24601. This is the same number that Jean Valjean is branded with in the musical Les Miserable.

We know it was a book first, but who honestly cares about that?

Whilst this might seem like the writers just nodding at their favourite stage show, the comparisons between Skinner and Valjean run much deeper than just a number.

After being released from prison, Valjean must assume a new identity in order to advance in society. Under his new name, he eventually becomes the respected mayor of a large town.

Now think about Seymour Skinner - real name Armin Tamzarian. He too took on a new name and used it to achieve a position of influence in a community. Like Valjean, his world also crumbles when his secret is found out.

Clues about Skinner's deception were there all along and we never saw them. Now if we could only get some information tying Mrs. Krabappel to Fantine, we'd have the complete set.
