The smart kid in class is always something that shows including schools need to survive, mainly because it's an easy target for jokes and plot. With Lisa being the most intelligent child in her class, the show needed another geek to balance the scales, and that's where Martin steps in.

He plays his role well, as his dorkiness relieves a little bit of Lisa's, but that doesn't mean he's the most fun character to play with. Martin can often be aggravating, as his obsession with class and working hard is often shown to be a detriment to his other classmates. This makes it hard to enjoy his involvement in the show at times.

Martin does have some merit in his funny vocals and his ability to act as a sponge for bullying jokes, but this doesn't do a lot to make him feel more likeable.
