The Single Biggest Mistake Every Doctor Who Series Has Made
8. Series 6: Weak Finale
Series 6 could have been remembered as one of Doctor Who’s best.
The first half of the series gets a lot right. There’s an incredible two-part opener, a sense of dread throughout, and some of the show’s most unsettling monsters in the form of the Silence and Gangers. It all built to a dazzling mid-series finale, with a cliffhanger that was both satisfying and yet left you chomping at the bit to see what was next.
And while Let’s Kill Hitler might not be the most convincing premiere, the series’ second half has its fair share of quality, including all-time greats like The Girl Who Waited and The God Complex.
Everything was resting on the finale… which, sadly, didn’t quite stick the landing.
There’s a nice sentiment behind The Wedding of River Song, with River’s bid to save the Doctor a metaphor for the devotion of the show’s fans. But at one part long it's way too overstuffed. And in the end, the resolution to the Doctor’s ‘death’ was very underwhelming, not least because the 'Previously On' segment heavily signposted that the Teselecta would be involved.
Just think how much the perception of Series 6 would improve if The Wedding of River Song was on par with The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang.
