The Vampire Diaries came first, telling the story of Elena Gilbert and the Salvatore brothers. She was your typical high school student who became drawn into the dark world that Damon and Stefan Salvatore were involved in.
The Originals, well as the name suggests, is centred around the original vampire family, the Mikaelsons. They moved to New Orleans to try and build a new life for themselves.
Both shows have a huge fanbase, which is no surprise given the likability and in some ways, relatability, with the majority of the characters.
Elena Gilbert and Hayley Marshall on the outside are quite different, but when you get to know them throughout the seasons of their respective shows, you get to learn that they are both badass and emotional all at the same time.
