8. Self Help (Season 5, Episode 5)
Season five is full of so many perfect episodes that it's to be expected that one or two are going to get lost in the pack.
Self Help is one of those episodes. Taking place on the road as Abraham, Glenn, Rosita (Christian Serratos), Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Tara (Alanna Masterson) attempt to lead Eugene (Josh McDermitt) to Washington, the episode sees the group hit some serious road blocks on their journey.
Abraham becomes obsessed with his "mission", Eugene wipes out a mini-herd with a hose, and we finally get a chance to see where Abraham came from. Giving quick but full flashbacks to the former soldier's early days in the apocalypse, we're finally able to see why he is so determined to get Eugene to DC.
Drawing Abraham as a committed and broken man filling the void of his past tragedy with work, Self Help makes for a harsh and powerful character study and ends with the sudden announcement that Eugene isn't even a scientist and there is no mission.
