The Walking Dead: 11 Major Moments From The Comics We Still Need To See

6. Rick Losing His Hand

Perhaps the most iconic moment in the whole of the comic, The Governor chopping off Rick's hand early on in the series defined the character going forward. Proving once and for all that anything could happen and nobody was safe, mutilating Rick was far more shocking than any of the book's high-profile deaths.

Memorable for more than the pure shock, Rick's amputation completely and irrevocably changed the dynamic of the comic. Having a main character with only one hand provided huge obstacles for the cast as the book wore on, and was an effective way to show how living in this post-apocalyptic world only broke people down more and more the longer they survived.

Sadly, the show's creators have talked at length about how Rick probably won't be losing his hand anytime soon, and even Robert Kirkman has repeatedly gone on record saying he regrets amputating the character so early on.

Consequently, despite Andrew Lincoln recently saying that he wants it to happen, the cost of the effects to hide his arm in every episode probably makes it unfeasible, but that doesn't mean someone else won't suffer the same fate in Season 8.
