The second-half of Season 6 really was great. It started with the absolute madness and horror of that mid-season premiere, introduced a great new character in Jesus, and did a superb job of expanding the world the show is set in with the Hilltop and Saviours. The episodes moved forward with real intent, and there was palpable excitement the closer it got to Negan's introduction.

When the man himself arrived, it was into a edge-of-your-seat, teeth-clenched, breathless scene, that delivered the level of tension and unpredictability the show at its best excels in. This was a moment, whether you'd read the comics or not, that you'd likely heard about, and couldn't wait to see.

And then they faded to black, without showing who was killed. It cheapened the scene, and by extension the episode, season, and introduction of Negan. It felt like a deliberate grab for Season 7 ratings, and a way of ensuring people were talking about the show. To that latter end it certainly worked, but none of the talk was positive, fans were pissed off, and it really needs to deliver in the Season 7 premiere to win back the goodwill it had built up.
