This is something the show has started to improve on, but through the first few seasons it was an incredibly noticeable element and a major point of contention among the show's fanbase and in wider circles as well.

Back in those earlier days, it genuinely seemed to be the case that the show would not have more than one or two black characters at a time, with a rotating cast and the black characters often being killed off. Jacqui, T-Dog, Oscar, Bob, Tyreese, Noah, just to name a few examples, were all killed off, and while some briefly coexisted alongside other black characters, there was definitely an issue (not necessarily intentional, but it did exist nonetheless). Obviously people are always going to die on the show, but when it became a running joke amongst the fanbase, with an underlying point of anger, something's going wrong - which, to their credit, they have started to remedy more recently.
