The Walking Dead: Every Main Character Ranked Worst To Best

18. Merle Dixon (Michael Rooker)

Walking Dead
AMC

Starting the show off as the brash, arrogant and unwanted member of the Atlanta camp in season one, Merle vanished from the show after the first few episodes.

He returned in season three, working as The Governor’s right-hand man, before being reunited with Daryl.

The scenes with his brother were his strongest. Sure, he was still Merle - racist, sexist and mostly terrible - but thanks to Michael Rooker’s energetic performance, there was something magnetic about him.

The scene where Daryl finds his brother dead has slipped into TV legend now, and manages to pack a punch not just because of Daryl’s breakdown, but because in his final moments Merle proved what kind of a man he really was.
