The Walking Dead: Every Season 2 Episode Ranked Worst To Best
6. Save The Last One
Shane Walsh is front and centre in this season, alienated, power-hungry, and driven slowly into madness by his love for Lori and leadership clashes with Rick. Save the Last One shows just how twisted he really is, and begins his descent into all-out villainy.
In the previous episode, Shane had agreed to go with Otis to the nearby school to get supplies for Carl's operation, only their trip had gone wrong when a horde of walkers trapped them, seemingly with no way of escaping.
The brilliance of the episode lies in its narrative framing. Opening with Shane shaving his head and staring blankly at the man he doesn't recognise looking back, it doubles back on itself to reveal that Shane shot Otis and used him as walker bait so he could escape. He tells the others Otis died a hero.
The way the episode is bookended by Shane's decision to shave his head - covering up an injury left by Otis as he fought for his life - perfectly symbolises just how far gone he has become, and how selfishly dangerous he can be.
