In Who Are You Now?, Daryl and Michonne were seen sporting matching scars on their back, teasing some tragic story that transpired in the years following Rick's presumed death. Scars is the episode that finally gives us that story.

A dual narrative exploring Michonne's fractured relationship with Judith, the episode explains how Michonne met a pre-apocalypse friend and was betrayed by her, whilst in the present Judith tries to come to terms with her mother's alienating leadership decisions.

What follows is perhaps the show's most harrowing and well-acted hour, as Michonne is forced to kill a group of kids to save a young Judith (after she and Daryl are tortured, of course), and then must make a serious decision that ends up setting the next season and a half of action, drama, and death in motion.
