Even if Eugene has converted to The Saviours, Negan has at least one double agent in his ranks after Dwight offered his services to Rick in the latter stages of season seven.

After the Alexandrians were double crossed by The Scavengers, Negan’s trusted lieutenant then made it clear that he was not playing Rick by leaving one of his wooden carvings for Daryl to find, marked “didn’t know” to illustrate his naivety to their pact with The Saviours.

If the comic book narrative is anything to go by, Dwight is poised to play a big role in the conflict between Rick and Negan, but his main focus might be on finding his former wife Sherry, whose escape from The Sanctuary freed Dwight from Negan’s tyranny. Now that Sherry is out of harm's way, Dwight no longer has to accept his life under Negan’s rule.

Sherry is still on the run and Dwight will not want to leave her out in the open, vulnerable to all manner of threats. It was clear from his emotional response to reading Sherry’s farewell letter, and the keepsakes that he has of their time together, that Dwight still loves her.

Will he find Sherry and, if so, can they restart their lives as part of Rick’s community?
