The Walking Dead: Season 9 Episode 1 Explained

1. A Bridge Too Far

The Walking Dead Rick
AMC

A large part of this episode is centred around Rick's plans to build a literal bridge between the various communities, as a means of bringing them closer together and opening up easy and direct trade/supply routes.

While not everyone agrees, it's fitting that Rick - as Lincoln enters his final run of episodes - is doing his best to honour Carl's vision and build a more utopian society where everyone lives in harmony.

It's in this bridge, though, that we can also see some hints towards his death and the impact it'll have. There's a very good chance Rick won't live - or at least stick around - long enough to see it finished, and with a herd approaching it might be that the collision of walkers (or Whisperers) with his efforts to see this through contributing to his demise. And if Carl's death made Rick want to realise his vision, then Rick's death would surely have the same impact on everyone else.
