The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Review - 8 Ups & 2 Downs From "What We"
6. Up: The Genuinely High Stakes
Because Rick and Michonne's version of Marriage Story is so horrible to watch, the stakes feel higher than ever, the intimacy and immediacy of their dangerous situation heightening with every argument they have.
The stakes for the past few weeks have revolved around whether Rick and Michonne can actually escape their new life and find their old one, which is waiting for them. This week, the pressure is on whether they can make peace with who they've become, and the results are gripping.
We know, of course, that these two are going to be okay, that happily ever after is just around the corner. But is it? "What We" does an impressive job of allowing their friction to heighten the uncertainty surrounding their futures, giving a seemingly cut-and-dry story some much needed ambiguity.
Is Rick too far gone to save? Have they changed too much to still be together? Can Michonne convince her husband to come back to her and their children? These questions are genuinely up in the air, and the fact the answers are so surprising is seriously impressive.
