The X-Files New Series: 5 Reasons To Be Excited

1. Learn From Mistakes

Now, just because The X-Files was an awesome show that made millions of people question the fidelity of their governments and enabled a whole generation of viewers to sneak show quotes into everyday conversation doesn€™t mean that aspects of the series were not mishandled. The mytharc suffered after the mass executions of the Syndicate that had orchestrated the conspiracy for the majority of the first six seasons, and attempts to instigate a similarly sinister mythology faltered more than succeeded as producers failed to follow through on plots. The deaths of the Lone Gunmen only really served to give them a last hurrah at the end of the final season, and baby William€™s adoption was hard to swallow. The arc most mishandled, however, was that of the romantic relationship between Mulder and Scully. Despite the sexual tension sparking between them for years and shippers panting for a love scene, the consummation of their relationship in Season 7 happened off-screen€and by implication. Their first non-dream sequence, non-New Year's on-screen kiss came in the Season 8 finale as they stood over their newborn son, whose paternity was only definitively confirmed in the Season 9 finale. Chris Carter had maintained from the very beginning that their love was so egalitarian and academic that a romantic relationship was off the table; add in a crippling fear of the so-called €œMoonlighting Curse,€ and the romantic lollygagging nearly ruined the dynamic. Not that there€™s any lingering bitterness or anything. With a whole lot of hindsight, fan feedback, and professional reviews to use as guidance, Carter and the other producers may be able to learn from their mistakes and stick with what works to create a miniseries worthy of the glory days of The X-Files.
