Whether it's stealing from his deceased father or doing little errands for Number 5, Klaus is always trying to make sure he's got enough money for his next hit. However, when he accidentally send himself back through time and is forced to go without the drugs that allow him to keep the demons in check, his life changes rather dramatically.

While he's only gone for a day in the present timeline, he actually spends a year in Vietnam and falls in love with a fellow soldier called Dan. While we don't get to see a whole much of their relationship, we do get to see enough of it to know that when he dies it breaks Klaus' heart.

For the first time in his life he actually cares about someone over than himself and the death of that person effects him greatly. However, as sad as it is, it's also a catalyst for him to change as he's able to stay clean and fully utilise his powers to their full potential.
